noisy neighbours making friends ill?

my friend is at her wits end - her neighours have a toddler that screeches day and night and is clearly heard through the ajoining walls - she has tried speaking to the neighbour but this has made no difference - in addition there is lot of additional noise - hammering and banging. It is affecting my friend's health and she is unable to take sleeping medication because this will affect her ability to do her nursing job - sensible suggestions please as to anything that may help her situation - She appreciates it is a difficult situation because the main noise is from a child and the mother screeching back at the child - the mother and child in question rent the property from a private landlord but are funded by the DSS

Your friend should contact the local council and ask for noise abatement department, they will advise her what to do.

Secondly try an independent arbitration service;again the council may have info on this.

Source(s): I had to do this. They told me to keep a log of times of noise disturbance and how loud. this then formed a body of evidence to back up my case.

Ask the Social Services to check up on the way the child is being treated. It might be a case of cruelty.

Even if there's nothing amiss like that, the neighbour might realise the seriousness of the situation, and try to control her temper with the child.

If there is any cruelty, perhaps the child will be taken away, and half your problem will be sorted.

The banging noises are easily limited by the Local Council under your personal health rights.

    Good luck.

    Delicate subject.

This may sound like a BS story but it is in fact true. Our first child had colic so bad that he would turn brights red, scream like a demon and be stiff as as board. This happened every time he was fed and lasted for 45 minutes. Day in day out to think my wife and I were calm cool and collect would be a joke as we were beat. All the doctors, nurses, traditional, medicine did nothing.

The solution was to see a chiropractor for the child believe it or not. After almost six months of no help and the solution was basically just a massage. By just giving a gental masage to the back or different movements of the legs a little fart would come. After that life was great in comparison.

Just thought I would share as sometimes the best way to deal with a problem is be part of the solution.

    All of the best

I feel very sorry, your friend's neighbour cannot help her child's noisy screeching, but a noisy parent makes for a noisier child. Modern homes are built with no concern for the comfort of neighbours. I suggest that your friend first keeps an accurate record of the disturbances, time of day, frequency and duration, over the period of a week, then visits the local council social services department for advice. Our council, Stockton, has a contract with Broadacre Home Improvements for home maintenance problems, sometimes with help of funding. Your local council may be able to supply some wall insulation that will deaden the noise somewhat. Nursing is difficult enough without the added stress of being unable to relax at home. Hope things will improve soon. gladgran
