As has been pointed out, each island has a slightly different character to it. I have a website that I put together to help people just like you. I invite you to start at www.myhawaiionline.com/islands.html

then you can look at the other sections to get more specific information as you see fit. The "Islands" section gives a broad overview of each island's offerings, the "Activities" section details some specific things to do in the islands, and there is a "Some Favorites" for more detailed looks at some of these activities/attractions.

The best thing is, no matter which island you pick, you're bound to have a great time away from winter weather. January is great timing to watch the surfers on the north shore of Oahu, if you're into that kind of thing or whale-watching on just about any of the islands.

Kauai is the most beautiful. It has their own grand canyon and the Napali Coast. Waikiki Beach on Oahu is the area to go if you love crowds and lots of shopping. The North Shore of Oahu is famous for having big waves in the winter. I have not been to Maui.

They are all awesome and you will have a good time whichever one you pick. Maui is the most luxurious one with some very high end resorts in Kaanapali and lots of beaches.

Maui has the Road to Hana, Haleakala volcano (for sunrise on the volcano), and a really nice tourist town, Lahaina with a big Banyan tree in the middle. Maui is my favorite. The grounds of some of the resorts are really fabulous. Ione needle is really nice. There is also one of the best aquariums I've seen anywhere.

The Big Island of Hawaii is my second favorite because it is a bit emptier and has an active volcano. Volcanoes park is very neat. You can see where lava crossed roads.

Oahu is the one to pick if you like big cities, lots of restaurants, exposure to Japanese culture. Hilton Hawaiian Village is fabulous and walking distance to restaurants and shopping. There is the Aloha Tower, Pearl Harbor, some scenic drives.

Kauai is the emptiest one. There is very little in the way of towns and restaurants and things to do other than see nature. Poipu beach is very shallow and good for kids.
