If it is Constitutionally ok to burn the US flag, then why isn't it ok to burn a religious book?

About the burning of the US flag within the interpretations of the First Amendment Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. asserted that "if there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea offensive or disagreeable."

Update:

I am not condoning either one of these acts. I am opposed to anyone burning the US flag or any religious item! But at the same time, I would not give any individual any media coverage. They are only seeking attention and their fifteen minutes of fame. The do not deserve one second of attention and definitely no fame, only shame!

It's Constitutionally ok to burn the book. Both acts are in bad taste and meant to insult others. Legally, both are fine. Morally, people need to grow up and show some respect even if they don't agree with the opinions of others.

I know what you mean, ..it does seem a bit two-faced of 'other' cultures to burn our flags, and nothing gets said, politically, ..but should 'we', in the West, do anything that they may consider to be against their beliefs, it gets stamped on immediately.

An 'understanding' of each others beliefs, and culture, goes both ways. It cannot ever be a one-way street.

I'm under the impression that the 'West', has had it's face rubbed in it for far too long.

But we are far too polite to say so.

    Aren't we.

One day, perhaps we'll even draw cartoons of the whole nonsensical affair.

    Possibly.

It's not ok to do either just burning a religious book is a lot worse. You don't just offend some people from a single country, you offend billions across the world from all different countries. The consequences would be disastrous.

It is legal to burn both. Brennan's words are exactly what is in play here. Even though society (foreign and domestic in these cases) find these acts offensive AND disagreeable, government is not prohibiting them.

Burning the Koran is constitutionally okay. It's just a stupidly disrespectful thing to do, just like burning the US flag.

It isn't a question of can they but SHOULD they. What are the unintended consequences and are they good or bad.

Dove Church unquestionably has the right to burn the Qu'ran. And I unquestionably have the right to tell them that if they do so they are doing exactly what anti-American extremists want them to do.

It is legal to burn a religious book. The US Military burned thousands of pashtu language Bibles in Afganistan. It is in poor taste to do it, but the first amendment allows it.

It's perfectly legal, and decidedly stupid to hand a ready made PR recruitment campaign to our enemies. Go ahead...but be prepared for more people blowing themselves up in our cities. It's like the right actually wants a religious war. Start a religious war and you better be careful what you wish for.

IDK, and the only way we can find out an answer is by going ahead with a law banning the burning of Bibles, Korans, etc., and then we'll find out what those Sup. Ct. Justices have to say about it.

    It is legal.

But it is already causing riots in Afghanistan.

Do our soldiers need to have a hail of rocks, from our allies, everywhere they go, on top of Taliban bullets and rockets?
