What was it that made the Redskins good in the early 1980's and the early 90's?
Nowadays the Redskins are not as good as those teams and they sign free agents. My grandad and my mom tell me they were a real good team in those days? Why are they so inept now?

Because they were loaded on both sides of the ball. If you win Super Bowls with Doug Williams and Mark Rypien, you have talent.

It was the offensive line hands down. That is where the term "hogs" came from in the 80's. Russ Grimm and others. Also we had 3 great WR's called the "posse" Art Monk (hall of famer) Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders. Also Hall of fame coach Joe Gibbs. The Redskins were not anything to play with back in the 80's early 90's. Overall it was great coaching. Can't forget about Hall of famer John Riggans at RB and D. Green at corner.
Also RFK stadium in DC was a tough place to play at for visitors.
@BAM. Were the playoffs shorten those years? What difference does it make? Would u be saying the same thing if ur team won those years?

Back then, they had the greatest offensive line of all time. Now, they add great system players and don't utilize their strengths. (i.e, Adam Archuleta, Jeff George, Brandon Lloyd, Jeremiah Trotter, and of course, Fat Albert).

Strike-shortened seasons. Two of their 3 SB winning season were in seasons that were shortened due to strikes. Ironic or no? Hmm...
