You will have to do some research first to se if the glass of your door is tempered or not. tempered glass can not be cut - you would see a little seal in the corner of the glass that would indicated that it's tempered. if it isn't, it is possible to install a pet door in glass but only one for cats as the opening needs to be pretty small and the pressure against the glass when a pet passes through the door needs to be pretty light.
I have attached a terrific link to an article that helps you with the step to step process and things to consider.

It would cost more to have a door cut than purchasing a panel made for this purpose.
You can purchase a glass panel with a pet opening, that fits in the sliding glass door tracks, and screws to the wall on the lock side of the door opening. The sliding glass door slides up against the panel and locks to it just like it does to the wall. All you loose is about 8 inches of the total door opening width.
A pet panel for the Patio Door cost about $150, but that is cheaper than having the 2 glass panes in a patio door cut, which will result in the loss of the Inert Gasses between the panes, and compromising the thermal factor of the door,

Glass doors do not like square cuts made in them Lizzie. If you don't want to have the glass cut, (which might not be an option anyway - most glass doors are hardened, and can't be cut) you'll have to replace either the whole door or at least the glass, and replace it with something which can be cut into a cat flap. What about the wall area adjacent to the door? Can that be used? Or train the cat to come in another door.

If this is a glass door and I'm assuming it is your out of luck sweetheart. The glass should be tempered, this means thickness has little to do with it. For safety it has to be tempered for safety so one can't trip or? and go through it. Usually these doors (glass( can't be used for anything simply because they can't be cut, not without damage. You'll have to get a professional to do this or your going to lose your door. By the way, you can by the door with this opening but, they're not cheap.

If this is a DG door it can not be done ! if your door is split in two (separate panels top and bottom) then you can replace the lower Panel with a plastic unit then get cat flap fitted in this, Remember to keep the glass Panel just in case you need to refit it. Had this done at home with large flat total cost around £120.00
