Mavic GP4 tubular question?

What is the smallest size that I can fit on a Mavic GP4 rim. Would I be able to fit a 700x19 tire? (Don't worry I only weigh 100 pounds)

You can probalby get some 700x18s on there but honestly you shouldnt unless you are going to be racing on an indoor velodrome.

small tires will not make you faster on the road. I know they kind of feel faster, but it is actually an illusion. They do not roll smoothly over rough or uneven surfaces like your average road (unless you have some damn smooth roads in your area). A larger tire, like a 23 or 25 will actually soak up the bumps and believe it or not you will go faster because your bike is not getting jostled around. This also applies to tire pressure. Don't pump your pressure up to the max especially if you only weigh 100lbs.

I have ridden 20s on the road and let me tell you it is not fun. Super narrow tires are only good for super smooth surfaces, like an indoor track. If you are riding on the road, let me tell you, every corner will be sketchy, every descent will feel insecure, and even on the flats, your butt will hurt more than ever because anything smaller than 23s will not provide enough shock absorption. Road bikes don't have any suspension except for the tires and the springyness of the frame, and even the frame does not make a big enough difference when it comes to tiny tires. I had my 20s on an old steel frame (known for comfort) and a brooks saddle (also known for comfort), and it friggin made me so saddle sore.

If you are a roadie, get yourself some 23s trust me you will hate tiny tires after about 3 rides on them.

While narrow tires may seem to be attractive to increase speed, there is a point where they become too narrow for practical cycling. Even if you are light, tires narrower than 700 x 23 are not very practical for everyday riding. One of the benefits touted by tubular advocates is a more comfortable ride, but you lose that advantage with narrow tires that require higher pressure for the same weight rider. On anything but the smoothest roads ultra narrow tires actually create more road friction, the only benefit they offer is better aerodynamics, which don't come into play until your speed exceeds 40 kph. Basically tire that narrow should only be used for individual time trials. The tire would fit the rim, but even someone as light as you should be looking at wider tires

I like to throw this in conversation every once in a while. Spice things up a bit...keep it real you know. It really helps people understand exactly how you feel about whatever you are calling tubular. I mean, really, sometimes cool just dont cut it.
