Is tachycardia rare in barbiturate poisoning?

    Couldn't tell you. I almost never give barbiturates anymore, and when I do, I don't overdose my patients.

    I can tell you that barbiturates do not typically affect heart rate, but toxic doses will cause decreased contractility and decreased vascular tone. How an individual's heart responds to that will vary according to his/her cardiac status. Tachycardia certainly may be a compensatory mechanism.
