The folks who answered seems to have mistaken "regular" tofu from "stinky" tofu which is different variety: highly fermented and really does stink. Even in China and Taiwan where it is a prized delicacy, not to many people eat "stinky" tofu" (it is really called "stinky tofu" or "chou do fu" in Chinese). I have tasted it in Taiwan and it is pungent to say the least plus the taste is unlike any kind of tofu commonly found in the West. I did not like it that much though I don't hate. Just one of those foods I prefer not to eat if I have a choice.
I've included a few links with images for reference:

To clarify this persyn is not talking about regular tofu but stinky tofu an actual Chinese/Asian dish.

also Fermented Tofu:

I have tried it or a lesser variation on it and didn't care for it. It is a very acquired taste and most folks wouldn't like it too much unless they like really pungent food.

Tofu is yummy! i'm a Vegetarian and i eat Tofu often... it doesn't stink or really smell like anything on it's own.. What in the world was your G-pa eating with it?
I know you can make it into deserts, drinks and use it as a meat substitution.
It takes on the taste and smell of whatever you are cooking it with.

Tofu is pretty absorbent, so it really depends on how it's cooked for taste AND smell! I personally do NOT enjoy the taste OR smell of plain tofu...however, added into soups, casseroles, or made into delicious chicken-nugget-like products, it can be DELICIOUS! :) I personally enjoy spiced food, so very plain things usually don't appeal to me unless I am too sick to eat more flavorful food.
I really hope you haven't based your entire opinion on tofu on one bad experience where you didn't actually eat it! If you want a fun way to try it WITHOUT a bad smell, I would suggest starting with a flavored version--sometimes they even come flavored like familiar animal-based foods (like the chicken-nugget example above--yummy!) Some are more realistic than others, of course...but even though I like some and not others, I almost certainly wouldn't like plain, smelly tofu!
I truly hope that your grandfather is all right and did not eat spoiled tofu! Please try not to judge others or their food preferences without real knowledge or experience. ;) Though even with the best of knowledge, of course, there's always the possibility that what one person really likes, another may really NOT! Have fun, and hope you eat lots of different kinds of food over the course of your life--my life has been an honest-to-goodness food ADVENTURE full of flavors and excitement...I wouldn't have it any other way. ;)

it was probably the way it was prepared. I am a vegan and eat tofu all the time. Anything could smell good or bad depending on the seasoning that is added to it.
I have eaten vegan foods that smelled better than any meat item out there. Like I said. it depends on the way it is prepared.
If you are smelling it raw than I have to ask...have you ever smelled raw meat?? Does not smell to great either.

Tofu smells a lot better than tuna. And my tofu and rice smells good and tastes better.

Fresh plain tofu has little or no smell-it must have been the way your grandfather prepared it. It takes on the taste and smell of anything you cook it with.

A lot of stuff smell bad but taste otherwise; durian and Chinese dumplings, for example.
