Are you more likely to answer someone's question because of their profile picture or user name?

Are you more likely to answer the question of a person who has a correct name, or a silly name? What kind of profile pictures are you more prone to click on, if any?

Just curious :)

I don't like clicking on questions where people use slang because they most likely aren't serious about writing. What is your opinion on this?

Update:

@lilyWhite: Guilty of the 10 Pts thing! But only a few times :P

Usually I pay more attention to the question. But if I'm having a hard time finding an interesting question, then I'll filter by "most popular" or look at questions my contacts have posted. Then I pay more attention to the person.

It's rare for me to answer the question of a non-contact just because of their picture or name. As others have said, sometimes a name or a picture is a turn-off. Like, if it's a picture of a swastika or something.

As for slang--depends on the slang. Regular slang, used in a fun way, like, "does your writing have bling?" I actually like that.

Textspeak? Misspelled words? Yes, that annoys me. They'll argue, "It's only YA! When I write for real, I write well!" But I don't believe them. What would you think of a mathematician who said, "I can't be bothered to add 5+12 correctly, because I'm relaxing at home! When I'm at work, I'll make sure I do my sums right!"

If it takes so much effort to write correctly that you can only be bothered when it's "for real," then I'd say you don't care much about quality writing. Most writers I know don't feel bothered by writing in proper sentences; it's second nature after years of practice.

I guess I'm guilty of this. Basically what others have said, profile pictures and grammar. I usually think that if people spend time on this website, they should at least upload a picture since it only takes a minute. I also recognize pictures more than user names as well. User names I don't have much of a preference, as long as it's not something completely weird and you can't even understand it. Correct grammar is a biggy for me though. If people can't even type their question correctly, I know they're not too serious about it. :)

Interesting question though, I've never really thought about it.

Neither. I read the question and decide. But, if it's a user I don't like, lol, then I'm most likely not going to answer their question.

THe only thing I hate are trolls who use fake pictures and then troll the forums pretending to be someone else.

I"m okay with the teenage slang as long as it doesn't go overboard (like the over-exaggerated slang the current troll is using).

Yeah, liek Lady Marian said, I recognize pictures more than names (or remember the pic, then remember the name)... one that comes to mind is Vanilla Bear, because they have a picture of this guy with his hands like glasses....

anyway, I like interesting pictures, and I do agree that people should get a picture, jeez. But I pay more attention to the name, than the picture, (I mean, obviously the question matters most).

I like clever names, or ones that I recognise the origin from (quotes from a movie I know, etc).

And in question titles, if people use slang, like... bad writing (Dude, i need u 2 help me w/ my story!!?) I don't usually look, unless theres NOTHING else.

I only do it because, I don't know, it just pisses me off. I mean, this is the internet.. theres thousands of people on here, mostly sounding like idiots, because all we can see is text (80% of communication is via non-verbal signals). So like, do yourself a favor and SPELL things OUT. Don't be a fool!

And I agree, if a person has "cullen" or "edward" in the name, I lose like, half my respect for that person. Sorry, but thats how it is.

I tried to make my name clever... because my picture is a snapshot of Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes... but I don't think anyone gets it. D:

anyway, I like questions about questions! good one.

I'd have to say that if a person has taken the time to actually take a profile picture, then I tend to be more interested than a blank slate. Names I really don't care for, but a biggie is spelling and grammar. If someone writes "Reed my bokk--Im 13!", then I really am turned off by that. Also, people who say "10 Points!" in their question just sound desperate to me.

  • I have this strange bias that people without pictures are kind of like creepy lurkers, hahah.

Idk why, but I feel like if you spend so much time on here, you might as well spend time finding a good picture that represents you, yah know?

I don't look at the names so much as the pics, but if your name is something along the lines of 'MRS.CULLEN4LYFE" Then I wont take you seriously.

Pictures also help me recognize the people on here. It's more likely to catch my eye if it's a picture that I recognize.

Sherlock: I got your snapshot/name. I remember it made me laugh. Sorry that's random.

Usually, I answer questions without ever even looking at the picture or username once. I just look at the actual question.

No. I only answer a question if it sounds interesting. That's it, I don't answer because of some fancy picture and user name, it doesn't matter what they have, a question can still be crappy no matter what it is framed with.

Neither i read the question and choose whether i want to bother reading the questing or not. Like i am wasting my time on this question right now.

Neither. I look at the question and ignore the profile pix and the name.
