My art teacher doesn't like me...?

Okay, so I have always been very good in art and today my art teacher made us paint a sort of abstract painting. I really liked mine and so did my friends. But my art teacher said it lacks inspiration and that it isn't imaginative and that it isn't good. But just the other day, he said that art cant be good or bad because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was really hurt by his comment because I am a sensitive person. Also, I don't understand how he could say this because he said that art cant be good or bad. He was also praising a girl who painted a house yet he called mine unimaginative. I'm really upset because I don't think it's fair if he gives me a lower grade just because he didn't like it. What should I do? SHould I tell him what I think?

Update:

Please answer...

Update 2:

My art teacher simply said construct an abstract painting and that was what I did.

Update 3:

By the way, today he told me that when you look at it upside down, it looks good. He told me that he's putting it in the art show sooo yeah. Now he likes it... bipolar much...

Perhaps your art teacher is trying to push or challenge you out of your comfort zone or perhaps you're right and he simply doesn't like you. I (personally being the person that I am) would ask him, respectfully. That being the key. "You said abstract art isn't good or bad because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yet you said mine lacked inspiration and imagination, can you tell me why?" and actually *LISTEN* to what he says, not what you think he may be saying, but the actual words. Be prepared to have a really crummy rest of the semester though if he takes offense at you actually asking what's up with the comments. The other half of the potential equation is that the rest of the semester can look up if you take his suggestions to heart and try to learn from them. If neither of these is an option for you, then just keep your head down and get through the class as best you can be realize that one opinion is simply that, an opinion. It's YOUR opinion that counts 20 years from now.

One must remember that Your art is viewed by different people with different views on what is good and what is not. An art teacher gives an assignment with a thought in mind as to what kind of subject or format he is looking for. Judging if you are able to accomplish the assignment in a way that expresses a certain thought or value. Did he give you any structure to your abstract or did he just say "do an abstract"?

If you didn't follow the "structure of the assignment" then maybe he was right in his evaluation.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder. He meant that he personally didnt like it but that doesnt mean that other art teachers wouldnt like it.Allot of people think picasso's paintings arent good or imaginative but other people like his work. Not everybody is going to like your paintings but other people will love them.Thats just the way it is

Have you considered that the teacher thought that your work was unimaginative because he sees you as an creative person who hadn’t done her best work. He is trying to get you to push yourself, that is, after all, his job – to get the best out of his student.

Art is subjective, he is the beholder in this case and he has to be honest, if he does not like it he should say so – if he had said the opposite just to avoid hurting your feelings he would have failed and let you down.

Well, you are correct. Art, good or bad, depends on the eye of the beholder and what he or she likes. I think he has a crush on the other girl and sucking up to her.
