Viewing a solar eclipse is more dangerous than looking at the sun while not eclipsed, because your eyes will partially adjust to the dark and be more venerable to point-sources of light, such as part of the photosphere appearing between two peaks on the moon. The sun is actually far brighter than you would imagine it to be at night, for example, because your eyes are much more dilated then. This is one reason some people seem to think you should see stars in pictures of the moon landings, because they think you should be able to see both at the same time. However, even if earth had no atmosphere, our eyes would not be able to adjust to both the brightness of the sun and the dimness of the stars at the same time.

The same reason staring at the sun ANY time is dangerous for your vision.
