What is the best wood for carving a recurve bow?
I am thinking of carving a recurve bow. I have lots of carpentry and carving experience and I was formally trained as a sculptor in university, but I've never carved a bow before. I am looking to make a recurve bow with approx. 45 to 50 lbs of pull, but I also want it to be a thing of beauty. Thoughts?

Ash and yew are traditional, but you really want to build with laminations of wood and fiberglass for best results when you are talking recurve. A straight bow can be carved from any tight straight grained wood. Old popular mechanics magazines from the 1920s through the 1950s had lots of bow designs- look for something like that.
Good luck.
