It is a fast day. But it's not about focusing on not eating, rather you are saying I'm not focusing on anything physical and only on the spiritual. There are quite a few restrictions, besides for the typical restrictions of a "holiday".
The entire day you are praying and literally asking for forgiveness and praying for a good year. It's a very serious day since we believe that your year is sealed and decided on that day...

Fast from sundown until sundown the next day (this year meaning Friday 'til Saturday). But praying is the most important part.

As a messianc jew who believes in Jesus as messiah (as he proved he was and is), i dont observe yom kippur as Jesus did the repentance for me, when he gave his body up for a blood sacrifice for sin in accordance with the Levitical law that requires a BLOOD SACRIFICE to eradicate the curse of sin. Jesus blood sacrifice was so great, since the spirit of God lived in the body that he sacrificed, that the sacrifice eliminated the need for any further days of atonement, the atonement now is to accept Jesus' blood sacrifice as having been done for OUR sins. So why celebrate yom kippur whenyou believe and understand this? we are thus freed from the law of sin. We can eat and be merry and praise God on yom kippur, for having sent Jesus to this world to die for our sins and freed us from the shackles of the laws, rules and regulations that torment the lives of so many Jews who think obeying all those laws frees them from sin. Ask them why they observe yom kippur? They say it is to wipe away their sins over the past year. So what good does the law do for them if they violate it on 364 of the 365 days of the year?

hank hill couldn't be more wrong on this, they don't eat they fast and have to confess their sins and its a day of forgiveness for your years sins, but it is not a fun holiday to look forward to, it is something to dread.

An old Jew told me- All of our holidays are about remembering a struggle against tyranny, and then alot of eating. I'd go with that.
