ANY Yahoo! Messenger program will not install properly if a former program, or an incomplete install, has not been completely deleted from the computer first. Delete all Yahoo Messenger references from the registry. Use the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs method, then double-check by going to Start > Search > files and folders > Yahoo! Messenger (notice the exclamation mark in the title). Write down and delete all references manually if necessary. The uninstaller works well for Vista and Win 7, but not for XP - it leaves behind MANY junk files when uninstalling.
