YA: Do you get annoyed when you can't understand question or answer because it is posted in another language?

Many times we see that many questions and answers are posted either in scripts other than English or in another Language using English Scripts.

I understand many times it is easier to express the views in the local language, but majority of the users do not understand it, thus those content become like a Chat room for a group of users belonging to that language.

Do you get annoyed, and irritated when you visit a question and find that you cannot understand that or contribute that, because the questions and/or answers are posted in languages other than English? What is your immediate reaction?

Update:

Sorry, forgot to mention, this question is about Yahoo Answers India, and on broader view, all Yahoo Answers English sites. And please see and see what does Yahoo Answers community guidelines say:

http://help.yahoo.com/l/in/yahoo/answers/abuse/abu...

Yahoo! Answers is available in many different languages. Scroll to the bottom of any page to see which international versions are available. The language you participate in must match the language of the site you are on. To participate on the US site, for example, you must use English. It is OK to ask how to say a particular word or phrase in another language--for example, you can ask "How do you say 'Check please' in Spanish?" on the US site.

So it is absolutely correct to ask or answer a question in Chines on Yahoo Answers China but not on Yahoo Answers India or US because Chinese is not site language on these sites but English.

Update 2:

Edit @ Veers Sir, I am neither Marathi nor Tamil. I emailed Banajaran madam about me.

I don't think German or Spanish or Egyptian users post contents in their native language on Yahoo India or Yahoo United States. Yahoo has Language specific sites and those users are posting their contents on the respective language sites, no one will get annoyed.

yes, i am annoyed so much when i can not understand question or answer because it is posted in another language. Even, i will not post any question or give answer in my mother-tongue, tamil. If it is compelled, i will use english translation. For example, i saw a question from MR just a five minits before. MR madam correctly used the languages duly translating it into english.

    the giver or borrower ? who gets more sorrow ? giver or taker ? இப்போது கலங்குவது கடன் கொடுத்தவனா ? கடன் வாங்கினவனா ?

In the Ramayana, poet kambar when describing Ravana's deeply disturbed disposition equates it to that of a man in debt. He says this '' கடன் பட்டார் நெஞ்சம் போல் கலங்கினான் இலங்கை வேந்தன் ''.

This is a correct method if situation compels to use a local language besides english. A mere english translation is a must so that the other language people, other local language people can understand the question or answer.

what to do ? i am getting annoyed is true and just i will skip the question which comes or posted in another language. The discipline and decency should also be in yahoo answers too.

  • I accept it is not proper to ask in a language which cannot be understood by many users. This habit is widely with many group like Egypt, Tamil and few Hindi users.

I too post in Tamil, but I give translation along with the question or answer. But I think there need not be any irritation or getting annoyed as it can be ignored. There are many approved languages like German, Spanish etc are allowed in Yahoo. If I come across a question from German, I will have to Ignore, than getting annoyed. In such case what is wrong in using other Indian languages? The population of any Indian language users are definitely more than German or Egypt users.

    @ Banjaran:

I think friend MS Sir is not Tamil, and to my knowledge if I am correct he is Marathi.

  • If you go to religion and spirituality and see a posts where a shloka is posted in Sanskrit or Tamil and then explained in English that is fine, if you go to Jokes and riddles and some joke looses its meaning if translated and is posted in original language and then translated that is fine.

But the story does not gets over here. It is very often seen that, users belonging a particular language on yahoo answers India use their native language as a medium of chat on yahoo answers India. I have seen users protesting against the Yahoo answers decision of not allowing local Indian languages on Yahoo Answers India, which makes no sense to me. Yahoo Answers India is for entire India and Indians across the world. And if local languages are allowed and local languages are encouraged on Yahoo Answers India, the posts on Yahoo Answers India will be limited to groups. Tamil questions and answer for Tamil users, Telugu for Telugu, Hindi for Hindi and so on. And after that when contents get deleted, then these users create a big deal out of that.

I think every user should understand that Yahoo Answers India is not for a particular language user, yahoo answers India is not a particular region, but Yahoo Answers India is for Indian users across the glob. Keeping that in mind, yahoo has made a policy, a guideline that all contents should be posted in English only. Thus users should abide by rules of the site.

It is not that Marathi do not know who to write in Marathi, or Hindi speaking people do not how to write in Hindi, and so on... But they are abiding by the rules and helping other users. And I think others who are not helping should also help.

Yes, it is annoying, to see questions and answers in another language that I cannot understand. And my immediate reaction is, "oh god damn it, when will these user mature." And the move on to another question. In this way more than me the user who has posted contents in another language is the looser, because he is missing contributions from others.

Thanks for raising the valid and excellent concern of many users like you and me.

'individual's' answer is basically splendid. If, even nonetheless, a particular question needs a distant places language respond then for sure that's suitable/tolerated (e.g. 'what's the Spanish for...?). On events, I actual have published replies bilingually if the asker mentions being of a particular nationality and the respond demands very lots of component; I actual have not, so far, had any 'violations' for doing so. in my opinion, i've got faith Yahoo would be far extra advantageous off directing their interest to the far-too-regular questions published right here in illiterate gibberish contained in the guise of English. i do no longer recommend questions from distant places posters serinusly seekìng help with English, yet fairly those published via so-called interior reach English audio device who're the two too lazy, too rude or too ignorant to place in writing in splendid English. perchance the restrict at using different languages would desire to make larger to 'text cloth-ese'.

YA: Do you get annoyed when you can't understand question or answer because it is posted in another language?

I dont want to be sarcastic but i have found that mostly Tamils do this thing ....and i think you are Tamil so it can be easy for you ....i rarely see someone asking in hindi or any other language other than english in Yahoo INDIA.

If someone gives translation then it is ok but i have seen people questioning and answering in totally Tamil (it can be in other language also but i said Tamil because it is common just as hindi is common in north)

I always avoid and never mind that why they are doing this but because you have asked , i have given the answer.

i am fully agreeing Banjaran Madam answer. yes, whenever i come in tamil language, i use to give english translation. one or two may be missing, but i will hereafter follow it. As you narrated it is annoying. i will simply go skipping. i ask you seriously, anyone care community guidelines ? When manager or superior coming, the office staff will work seriously, and once they left they put down all their works pending by continuing their chat. so, the community guidelines gives us hand when one find a flaw.

Leave aside other languages.Sometimes even the questions in English defy one's capability to

understand. If one were to get irritated or annoyed with every such poser, one would earn the sobriquet

"sourpuss" from friends and foes alike. If I don't understand

a particular question for any reason whatsoever,I do not strain myself to try to decipher it but just move on to the next one that takes my fancy and then respond.

    Have a Great Day.
