Why do people complain that the Vatican didn't defrock Fr. Murphy in 1996?

Isn't it enough that the police and the DA investigated him in 1974? Isn't that what you say you want -- for the police to handle these things, not the Church?

Update:

Shielded him from WHAT?

Update 2:

Nope, not a troll. Someone told me in a previous question, "Any priests suspected of abuse should be dealt with by the police, not the church." (See my questions; Yahoo won't allow a link.)

I've encountered this sentiment elsewhere as well.

Exactly. It is odd that people would assume that the work of the police belongs to the church. If a clergyman commits a crime, he should be reported to the local police, not to the Vatican in Rome. If the police drop the ball, they should take the heat.

The church removed Murphy from any ministry after he was arrested. "Defrocking" makes no practical difference in the case. In 1998, the case was moved to a higher court when Murphy died.

Do you think the church should continue to give convicted paedophiles the status conveyed by a church title and position? Do you think they should support them financially? That's what they've done in the UK.

We're talking about men who got themselves into a position of trust and moral authority then used that position to RAPE CHILDREN.

The church should condemn them out of hand and utterly wash its hands of them.

Are you a troll? I can't seriously believe that someone would actually want a known child rapist to be allowed to keep their job as a respect authority figure.

They not only didn't defrock him, they actively shielded him. The Catholic hierarchy and your Pope are a disgrace.
