What type of bug is this?

I saw this guy on my stairs and moved him to the nearest tree, but what kind of bug is it?

    This is the caterpillar of a swallowtail butterfly. It has "false eyes" supposedly intended to deter birds and other predators.

    I agree with Paul, it looks to be a Swallowtail Butterfly Catapillar, you're quite lucky and he is quite fortunate to have someone escort him outside
