This is typically seen as a more "commercial" album from the band. Their debut album, was full of variety and although it had hit songs, many people thought that the songs had substance and meaning. Although Strange Days doesn't have all too much variety, it is still very modern and appealed to the fans because of the dark nature of the songs and the questions that these songs proposed.
In contrast, people found Waiting for the Sun to be too much like pop music made solely to appeal to teenage girls with poor taste. The album did have a lot of upbeat songs that upon initial hearing didn't have the same serious aims as songs on past albums. Think of it this way: the hit song for The Doors was Light My Fire, and Break on Through can also be considered since it was released as the single; the other "big" song on that album was The End. For Strange Days, the single was People are Strange. Compared to Hello, I Love You, it seems that they are much more "intellectual" than the others in the past. Other songs on Waiting for the Sun are seen as poppy happy songs such as Love Street, We Could Be So Good Together, and others.
As someone else mentioned, during this album Jim was drinking at his most which sometimes could be reflected on the album. Also, this album had more writing from the band members than ever before. I have heard of the "third album syndrome" in which the band has no new material to use from their pre-fame days since it was all used on the first two albums, forcing a large amount of songs to be written quickly while the band was busy on tour and whatnot.
Just as a side note, I am writing what I have heard as the complaints of other fans of The Doors. I think the album is actually pretty good, different, but still good. Sometimes it is easy to criticize a band for branching off into something new, but it is necessary for growth. I think for some, it is popular to dislike this album because it allows them to proclaim a position of intellectual superiority, in order to make themselves feel like they are the "best" fan. My absolute favorite song, Not To Touch the Earth is on this album, and defies what people like to say about this album.

BQ2: While writing this, I was listening to a bunch of stuff I downloaded by The Coral. I usually don't like many newer bands that much, but I really like the sound that The Coral has; the keyboard on some songs really reminds me of The Doors.

It's not I like all 6 so much that I had to tank it somewhere so I rank it 5th but very close to 3rd & 4th. Even Soft parade is my least favorite but I love half of the songs on it. The Doors didn't put out any bad stuff. Maybe people say it's the worst work they did bc it sold the most. Hello I love you got over played & a few others. It's timeless music and just as good in 2014 as it was when I first started listening to them in 1990. I'm sure it's same for the guys in there 60s ....it's a different sound. I call it good ole classic rock but it's really a mix of blues, rock & some poppy sounds and some awesome psychedelic ballads . Strange days is my favorite song. But I used to have all 6 tapes & of course played the greatest hits that came out in 85 over & over. My Friends back then would get sick of it but I never would. Any kind of mood music.....LA woman is the best song to drive to though on a nice spring or summer day. Only reason some say W4Sun is worst is bc heck I dunno :)

Probably Presence by Led Zeppelin, I actually like a lot of the songs on it, but its not horribly well liked by fans and critics, the same could go for In Through the Out Door. OH! Actually, it might be Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins, its an amazing album. BQ: Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young, a lot of people define it as a comeback album, and I agree, I think its an amazing comeback album. edit*** I also agree with Terrible Lie's choices. I actually *prefer* Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde to Surfer Rosa and Doolittle.

It was the album in which Jim Morrison was the least sober, just listen to Five to One, and the songwriting wasn't at his best.
