Memory serves me one finds protease in viruses. It has to do with their replication. Again, if memory serves there are 3 compounds, protease, transcriptase and interase. I know that one of the principals of anti- viral medication is to interfere with replication. Some anti-virals are protease inhibitors, some are transcriptase inhibitors. To my knowledge there are no interase inhibitors.

So. when one takes anit-viral meds, the medicine will inhibit either protease or transcriptase, depending on mechanism of action, and interfere with the replication.
