how do i type japanese characters on my laptop (windows xp)?

if i'm seeing characters on my laptop, i can't see them as characters, i see them as little boxes. why is that? and how can i see and type in japanese characters? please help! DX

    Goto control panel and then region and language.

    There click on tab 'keyboards and languages' and then 'change keyboards'

    Then click on 'Add' button. There sellect your required language and add it. Then a language bar will appear in your taskbar. There you can select your input language and type. If it works kindly choose it as a best answer. Thanks.

    I can't add more than what others just said , but if you don't find japanese language then I think that you should download the basic japanese fonts by searching for them in search engines (like Yahoo! or Google) and then follow the instructions about how to add them.

    You can change your keyboard language to what ever you wish by going to Control Panel ans selecting Regions and Keyboards, you would have to go back and change it back to english when you finish though
