A crush can last forever. And yes a crush can transform into liking someone. but as soon as you start to lose interest the crush goes away.

To be honest, I had a crush that lasted like a year it wasnt love, it was a crush. I liked her a lot, when you have a crush on someone, you can turn to liking him/her. once your over the crush you dont care about him/her that much as you used to, when you were in a crush.
