What you need is a film retriever, a thin strip that is inserted in the film slot of the canister with something to grab the film tongue. You can buy these or one guy has posted a way to make your own (see link). You wouldn't need a darkroom for this since you don't open the cartridge. Some photo labs have these and will do it for you. Hope this helps,

First of all, you don't need a "dark room" because you are not taking out the whole film strip; you just want to retrieve the film leader. You need something thin and flexible, but somewhat firm (and not too wide) to stick into the canister, like maybe a plastic knife. You put tape on it so that it sticks to the film when you put it in, so that you can pull the film out (double sided tape works best but I've done this with single sided tape (much harder)).

One time I used a smallest paper clip I could find and put a 1/8th inch 90 degree bend on one end. I worked in a darkened room. And. Stuck paper clip end into a 135mm film canister and fished around for a perforation and lucked out and pulled roll film end out. I used pliers to straighten the lip of the fabric light trap and loaded and unloaded film in a darkened room to keep from exposing film to light.

Another time with 135mm roll film, I wound spool gently outward several times and by pure luck got the narrow leader of film out enough to pull it out and load film into camera.

With 120 roll film, in a dark room or coat made into a portable emergency dark box/sack. Open film back. Remove roll film. Gently rewind. Reload into camera. close film back. Take pics.

I did this once. I used a thin but stiff piece of plastic and put double-sided tape on it. I stuck it into the slot deep enough to make sure it stuck onto the film, then pulled out the film.

I'm sure there are other ways, but this is the way that I used.

Or you can buy/borrow a film extractor. It might seem difficult to use at first but once you get the hang of it, it is very easy. It is not expensive and your local camera store might carry some.

(Search for "film extractor" using your favorite Search engine (Yahoo, Google, Bing, etc...) and you will find many descriptions and images.

    Good luck!

p.s. Having your own film extractor is very useful for those situations when you want to do double exposures of a film and they cannot be done right away.

Take it to a camera shop, see if they'll take it into the darkroom & fix it for you.
