There isn't a single answer for this. Some denominations of Christianity view them as angels others, such as the RCC, view them as men. Some manuscripts of the Septuagint have the “sons of God” rendered as “angels” and there seems to be division from the early church as to what exactly the sons of God are.

The expression is commonly used to represent a being with divinity. The most obvious use of the expression is with Jesus in the NT. He's described as the son of God not because he's a literal offspring to God, but because he contains the nature of God. The NT also uses the expression, “son of Perdition” for people who have a chaotic destructive nature. Perdition means waste, destruction ect. It doesn't mean the person is an offspring to waste, it means their nature is that of destruction and waste. So to be the “son of God” is to share the nature of God. This is why the expression fails to make sense if they're human. Mankind are not sons of God, they don't share divinity, they are sons of man/mankind - they're human in nature.

    *edit*

The interpretation of "the sons of God" as the pious line of Seth dates back to Julius Africanus (AD 160-240) and became widely adopted by Church Fathers and later on by Luther and Calvin. Most scholars recognize that "daughters of men" cannot have a narrower reference in v. 2 than in v. 1 of Gen. 6, and that consequently "sons of God" cannot denote a section of mankind. The Seth hypothesis is incorrect.

A portion of the angels desired human women. They were and still are very beautiful. What they did was to act on what they should not partake from by taking human form to have sexual intercourse with human women. The consequences of this was the Nephalim, giants compared to regular humans. Bible records do not show any of these to be anywhere close to good, much less righteous.

These angels were superior lifeforms compared to humans. So they were unstoppable until God took a hand.

There are a few different ways to look at it in my opinion but at the end of the day the interpretation of this verse isn't very important..

My guess is that Adam and Eve were created after God's day of rest and that people that were created before that day were still on the Earth. I would say that the daughters of these people were the daughters of man and the offspring of Adam and Eve were the sons of God..

    According to Jamieson Fausset-Brown

the sons of God saw the daughters of men--By the former is meant the family of Seth, who were professedly religious; by the latter, the descendants of apostate Cain. Mixed marriages between parties of opposite principles and practice were necessarily sources of extensive corruption. The women, religious themselves, would as wives and mothers exert an influence fatal to the existence of religion in their household, and consequently the people of that later age sank to the lowest depravity.

Well, I don't believe demons had sex with women, and got them pregnant, which is commonly taught in the Church. Sons of God is not a title that angels or demons have, since they were not created in God's image. If that were true, who are the sons of God which are led by the Holy Spirit in Romans 8:14? These are born again Christians! Romans 8:14 - For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Also, John 1:12 says, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:

Genesis 6:1, 2, which says: “Now it came about that when men started to grow in numbers on the surface of the ground and daughters were born to them, then the sons of the true God began to notice the daughters of men, that they were good-looking; and they went taking wives for themselves, namely, all whom they chose.” These “sons of the true God” were angels from heaven who materialized as humans and roamed the earth as men. They had not come at God’s direction; nor had they come to benefit the human family. Instead, they “forsook their own proper dwelling place” in heaven to have sexual relations with the beautiful women on earth. They became demons.—Jude 6.

Rebellious, perverted, superhuman in power and intelligence, these demonic angels exerted a ruinous influence on humans. It is likely that they controlled and dominated human society. They did not operate secretly, like a criminal mastermind who conceals his identity and works his evil, cloaked in shadow. Rather, they openly acted in shameless rebellion against the arrangement of God.

These angelic sons of God had relations with women, and the women bore children who grew to possess extraordinary strength. They came to be known by the Hebrew term “Nephilim.” We are told: “The Nephilim proved to be in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of the true God continued to have relations with the daughters of men and they bore sons to them, they were the mighty ones who were of old, the men of fame.” (Genesis 6:4) The Nephilim were much to be feared. The word “Nephilim” means “Fellers,” those who cause others to fall down. They were killers whose violent exploits are likely echoed in ancient myths and legends.

Who were those “sons of the true God”? They were spirit creatures, not humans. (Job 1:6; 2:1) How do we know? For one thing, marriage between humans had been taking place for some 1,500 years and warranted no special mention. So by drawing attention to the sexual union of “the sons of the true God” who materialized and took “the daughters of men,” the account clearly refers to something unprecedented, abnormal.

This abnormality is confirmed by the kind of offspring that resulted from these unions. Called Nephilim, they were hybrids who grew up to be giants. They were also vicious bullies. In fact, “Nephilim” means “Fellers,” or “those who cause others to fall down.” These brutes are described as “the mighty ones who were of old, the men of fame.”—Genesis 6:4

I believe the sons of God are angelic beings, just as they clearly are in Job Chapters one and two. Apparently angels have the ability to take on fleshly bodies. Certainly there are numerous appearances of them in the form of men throughout Scripture.

This action was a direct act of rebellion and defiance against God and was judged in the most severe terms, and this is what both Peter and Jude are referring to in their Letters.....

"For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment."

    II Peter 2:4-9 NIV

"Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. "

    Jude 5-7 NIV

The above passages, especially the one in Jude are even more clear when read in a more accurate translation, like the NASB, or the ESV; and even more confirning is the fact that Jude quotes from an apocryphal book later in his letter called the Book of Enoch, which elaborates greatly on this theme. You can check this out for yourself by running a search for the Book of Enoch and read it online.

The descendants of Seth saw that the descendents of Cain were hot and they married them.
