Is the mother of the bride wearing black to the wedding because she disagrees with the ceremony or is a black dress appropriate fashion for the occasion?

Traditionally it was seen as a bad thing if the mother wore black, black was a "funeral" color not a "celebration" color.
However, many people ignore this rule now. It doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I would never recommend to someone to wear black because you can never know what people will assume.

Typically, the mother of the bride wears whatever color she and the bride agree is appropriate and the mother feels comfortable in.
I've been to several weddings recently where the MOB wore a chic black gown because they look classic and stylish (and can be worn for other occasions). It wasn't a symbol of disapproval whatsoever.

Black is a very fashionable color to wear to weddings these days. There were many black dresses worn by the guests of the last three weddings I attended. I actually counted!! Of 130 guests at one wedding, 53 women wore black, including the mother of the groom. Another wedding there were 23 women out of a total of 75 guests wearing black. So, you see, those numbers are a high ratio of women wearing black.
No, no, no....wearing black is not some secret language which shows disapproval of the marriage.
If you want to wear black, go right ahead and do so. Black is fashionable.
As a matter of fact, funny as it may seem, Black is now a popular color for weddings and florals and cheerful colors are fashionable for funerals today!! Go figure!!

This was once a big no-no, but it is becoming less so. Since black is commonly worn to funerals it is considered a colour of mourning and thus disrespectful to wear to a wedding. But, more and more guests are wearing black to weddings and it's no longer the faux pas it was, but this varies regionally. You will even find the parents of the bride and groom wearing black now. My sister married recently and our mother actually wore all black, it was a non-issue. Of course, there are still those who might wear black to show their disapproval.

i wouldnt look into it to much. Both my future MIL and step MIL are wearing black to my upcomming nuptials in October (not a halloween wedding, oct 9th) and i have seen both of there dresses and they are lovely. The only Color i think that someone should not be wearing to a wedding is white because that is for the bride alone.

Traditionally you were not supposed to wear black to a wedding. However I think these days people generally wear an outfit they like and black is an acceptable choice.

ROFL...... Come out and ask the woman .... Some women wear black to everything these days.... it is slimming ya know..... I am serious, I would just walk up to her and with a smile ask her if there is some *meaning* to her wearing black... Watch her eyes and body language....But, to be honest, I would really NOT worry about it... go in peace.... God bless
