Proxy sites sound great and help you hide your identity, but there dangers with proxy servers.
Proxy sites claim to cover your tracks when surfing the web, but did you know that a large majority actually are designed to snoop on your information? I’ll explain exactly how and what they get from you!
Here is how proxy sites are supposed to work: You visit the proxy, enter the website you would like to visit and do your business. Many people use a web proxy to get around their employer’s firewall, such as visiting a shopping or gaming site. Other people use proxy sites to protect their privacy while on the internet.
Proxy Site – Good and Bad!
All proxy servers have the ability to track everything you do, and most companies providing legitimate services will only reveal this information if required to do so by authorities.
However, the bad guys track your activity for the purposes of gathering credit cards, birth dates and other valuable information. In fact, many ruthless webmasters set up proxy sites just for this purpose.
Many of the proxy sites actually report your IP address along with the IP address they are allowing you to use – known as a transparent proxy.
A good proxy site will use an anonymous server which come in two flavors:
disguised and Elite servers. The Elite proxy site does not leave any information or clues that it is providing these services. The disguised proxy will not show who it is protecting, but it will let sites know that it is a proxy server.
What proxy site should you use? Use this simple rule – If you’re going to conduct business or give away personal information like credit card numbers and what to hide your identity, then use an elite proxy site.
If you’re just browsing around and not planning on buying anything, then the free proxy sites will work fine.

Proxy sites are not safe for the most part. Most proxy sites can be used for malicious intent such as stealing credit card information, banking information, or personal information. It is better to know where the proxy site is hosted, if the hosting company and the proxy site are both reputable. Since most are not and the point of the proxy is to hide your information from others, it is not recommended to use proxies in times where you need to bypass your office.
There are other, much safer ways to bypass office blocks, such as using a VPN, or using a Remote Desktop session. Team Viewer is a great program and you could use it log into your home computer and do all the browsing you want without having to deal with the blocks at work, or with the possibly unsafe proxies around the internet.
If you do feel you need to use a proxy, do your research on it first.

It honestly depends on what you mean by safe.
If you use a proxy, the person who runs the proxy can not only see everything you enter in forms, but he can also see your IP and other personal information like that. You really shouldn't log into anything important on a proxy, because the person who runs the proxy can see EVERYTHING.
But, also, if you're on a proxy, everything will be safe from everyone -except for the person who runs the proxy (well, I mean your information will be safe. I mean, if you go to a bad site and enter credit card numbers and things like that, of course it will be unsafe, and if you get a virus, a proxy won't stop that, but other things like your network (your connection to the internet) will be invisible.
So, I suggest going to a VERY well known proxy. That way, you know the person who runs the proxy won't abuse the information he has complete access to, and you'll be safe.

Usually, yes. As a web developer, I can safely say very few people would take the trouble to set up a proxy site to infect people with viruses or steal information, as there are much easier ways of doing it. Yahoo operates a daily proxy list.

If you are unable to access a website because it is blocked by a filter, you can bypass the filter by going to:
Our proxy is run from within the USA.
Use the form at the bottom of the page to gain access. Special instructions will sometimes be listed to gain access to specific sites.

I highly recommend using vpnpower.net to unblock web-sites. I am using their services for more than 3 years without any issues.
