    Yes and i would worry if there were no metal carrots, potatoes and yorkshire puddings on it of a Sunday.

    No. Rust is caused by oxidation. As long as the metal in within your body, free oxygen does not get a chance to react with it to cause rust. Additionally, most metal rods and plates used surgically are either non-ferous, or stainless steel, so even if exposed to oxygen, they would not rust.
