Is this good cat food for ferrets?

I'm thinking of adding to our furry family and so I'm just doing some searching. PetSmart is the only pet store around that sells ferret food, and the stuff they sell seems like Junk from what I read.

So I looked through the cat food section and this seems like a really good one to feed a ferret. The Information is on the bottom:

What do you think? Would it be good or not so much?

Also if you know of some good ferret forums I can lurk through to get some more information PLEASE post it in your answer.

Cat food does not have all the nutrition that a ferret needs.

Basic Requirements for a Ferret Diet:

    * High in protein - 30-40 percent on the label nutrition analysis

    * Protein must be high quality, highly digestible, and be animal-based (not plant-based)

    * High in fat (at least 20 percent, perhaps up to 30 percent on the label analysis)

    * Very low in carbohydrates and fiber (less than 3 percent fiber)

I'm including a link to a Canada based website that carries ferret food.

Some cat foods are better than a lot of ferret foods. Ferrets are 'obligate carnivores' meaning they are 'meat eaters'. The first ingredients should be 'meat'. Foods are listed in the order from most to least, meaning if 'chicken' is the first ingredient then it has more chicken than anything else, if 'chicken by products' is second then that would be the second most ingredient. When I had my cats with my ferrets I fed my cats 'Eukanuba Chicken and Rice'. Eukanuba is an excellent food and fits both the cats and ferrets nutritional needs. Also, ferrets do imprint on foods so it is wise to offer several quality varieties.

I get my food from Petsmart.. Ultimate 8 in 1. It has the highest protein of any ferret food, and no co http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productI...

I've looked at that food too, but it simply does not give the best protein percentage. The best chart I've seen f or ferret food rankings is here http://www.mdferretpaws.org/care/food_treats.html

I never feed mine cat food unless I need to encourage them to eat. The reason I do this is because no cat food has the right nutritional values for a ferret. Try ordering James Wellbeloved offline. I use this with my ferrets and its a good high quality food.

    I'd also suggest a visit to: http://britishferretclub.users-board.com/forum.htm

They are a great site and help ferret owners from all around the world. They are very knowledgeable and will be able to help with every aspect of ferret owning.

That's a good choice as far as dry foods go, high protein and meat content very good....don't get James Wellbeloved it has been linked to organ problems in ferrets. The best forum IMO is holistic ferret:: http://holisticferret.proboards.com/index.cgi

  • I use Marshell's ferret food, it has aout 4lbs of chicken in the 5lb bag. And I mix it with cat food. The cat food isn't as food for ferrets though. However, my ferret will eat my cat's food and not touch her food unless I mix them together. Plus the cat likes the ferret food mixed in.

Its not really a big deal.

Just make sure it is really good high quality cat food.

Also chicken makes a great treat!! Lily loves canned chicken :)
