Should you say "thank you" to sign off when someone gives you a response that you don't want to hear?

For example, if you call a company to talk to them about a posted job opening, only to be told that it's been filled. Or calliing a bank, store, etc. to request something and getting turned down. Or calling about an item you want to buy from them and being told that it's already been sold. Could you just say "good-bye" instead?

In any one of those circumstances, they could tell you that it was worth coming in, that they were sure that what you wanted was available without checking first. Then you go, and waste your time. They saved you the trouble by checking something for you and giving the information that you would otherwise have to go and find out for yourself, and it would be normal to acknowledge that by thanking them.

If they give you a negative answer and it sounds like they just don't want your business, that's different. Don't thank them for that.

I say thank you. You're saying thank you for looking into it or informing you of the situation. Not thanking someone for the actual situation. Just saying Good-bye could come of as rude. If you're really against saying thank you you can say "Alright, Have a nice day."

You should say thank you. You are thanking the person for taking the time and effort to provide you with the information you were seeking. That is worthy of thanks even if you didn't like the answer.

  • well i guess the reason why it's polite to say thank you after those kind of things is because you called to get a question answered and they answered it.. now wether you liked it or not they still did what you asked them to. so genuinely the natrual thing to do is to say thank you ! :)

dont worry i dont always like to say thank you but i do anyways.. :)

I'd say "Thank you" anyway, because they gave you something--information.
