It may mean nothing. Approximately 30% of 18 month old infants will have systolic heart murmurs nearly all of which are benign. This is because of a thin chest wall, a more rapid heart rate, and a hyperdynamic heart as compared with adults. Such benign heart murmur resolve over time. If the physician is concerned that this is a pathological murmur they will order an echocardiogram. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you and your family the very best of health and in all things may God bless. JR
