How do I get a promotion? in retail?

I work in a retail store and I been there for about 6 months (asst. manager) and I recently heard that a store manager left a store that is actually closer to me, i would love to go for the position. Im learning as much as i can about the company and what they want as far as helping the business. Im just wondering how do i got about trying to get this position. would it be inappropriate to email my district manager about a opened management position, what should i say? what do you suggest?

    Hi,

I would recommend doing some leg work and learning as much as possible about the store. You should also contact the district manager, there is an old saying that the early bird gets the worm. If you don't take the initiative to go after it someone else will and if you feel strong enough about it, go for it. The wost thing they could say is no and the best thing they could say is "YES" but be prepared to answer "Why should we give you the position?" At all cost avoid coming across as to how it would benefit you but make it all about the company and how having you as manager with your dedication, commitment to excellence, and can do attitude is a compelling reason. If you are going to criticize have solutions, or first mention all the positives about the store. If the store is running well then keep it all positive that you want to continue in that direction. Most of all believe that you will do a great job in that position and that belief has the power of transference. Believe in yourself, You can do it!

    Absolutely Lily

There is no harm in applying for that position. if you know you can handel that job and can prove it in interview then you should go for it.

I always recommend people to apply and attend the interviews as much as you can. If not the position at least you will learn what seniors expect for that position.

    During interview, you should be

    Clear about your goals

    Focused towards target/goals

adhering to all the company policies and encourage people to do that.

In retail the most important part is you need to good at sales and admin. If you can prove it the job would be 100% yours.

    Good Luck
