Question about root canal.?

So Thursday I am going to get a root canal. It is the first time I ever had one done. What can I expect? Also my friend told me that after the treatment I will be bleeding for a couple days. To me that sounds strange. So is there any truth to what my friend said?

Update:

Actually I won't be awake for any of it. I have to be put out because I have a bad gag reflux. It is so bad they couldn't even do the X-Rays.

Anyway thanks for the answers.

No, you should not be bleeding at all. The procedure has advanced a lot and they can be absolutely painless with the right technique. A root canal is done to remove pain or infection, not cause it. The Dentist will get you numb and then remove the dead/dying nerve tissue. Most likely a crown will be recommended to protect the remaining tooth structure.
