Has anyone's dog had this surgery?

i have a 3 year old lab/Newfoundland and who know mix dog. She has to have surgery on her leg to repair the ligaments tendons and knee joint. For the life of me can't think of the actual procedure name. She is only 3 and has never been able to jump or squat to urinate she walks. She has to lose ten pounds before the surgery and they told me to feed her 1 cup food and 1 cup green beans. she is 90 lbs now. They told me 6 week recovery and then rehab. Her hips have never been that great either I think this is why she injured her leg. She didn't fall or anything. She has always had the activity level of a 10 year old. The surgery will be between 6 to 8 hundred dollars if that helps. please let me know what to expect. Thank you

Update:

No not a ten year old child a ten year old dog. Very quiet, she likes to watch my other dog chase the ball when I throw it she lays on the deck and looks like she is watching a tennis match.

I'm sorry to hear that...it sounds like a luxating patella. If so, I have not had any experience with this kind of surgery (my dog fractured his leg and totalled over $3,000) but there are forums online which have individual stories that may help...here are a couple:

    Hope this helps

This doesn't sound like ACL surgery to me -- that is far more expensive ($3,000 to $6,000) and the way you describe her, it's luxating patella surgery. This becomes evident when the pup is anywhere from whelping box to about a year old the knee(s) can begin to pop.

This surgery is HIGHLY effective. She will be acting like a 10 year old CHILD after she is rehabbed.

Ask them - you can do the rehab yourself as long as you are absolutely religious about keeping her quiet and following the rehab plans.

This is a congenital issue -- not necessarily genetic, but definitely originates in utero. Basically bad luck.

I've had this surgery done 4 times over the years.

Good luck, you will have a different dog soon!!

My 150lb mastiff/rott mix just had ACL surgery (he also had meniscus damage) 2 weeks ago. It was really awful for him the first day he cried and it took us an hour and a half to get him out of the car. But he recovered from the sedation medicine quickly and now thinks he has nothing wrong with him. They feel better fast so no matter what kind of surgery she has on her leg make sure to keep her calm. Our dog is only out of the crate when we are watching tv otherwise he has to be in there. The biggest challenge we have had is keeping him occupied and relaxed. Its a long recovery but is very important. Make sure you are completely devoted to his recovery and rehabilitation as you do not want to re-damage the leg. Our dog will be going through hydrotherapy when the vet says hes ready. The proper rehabilitation will help a lot. Your girl will look and act better faster than she truly is so keep in mind recovery takes a lot longer than the dog thinks.

It sounds to me like they are going to operate on her anterior cruiciate ligament to repair it. I couldbe wrong bbut that is not an unusual injuiry in large breeds.

I don't know quite what you mean by the "activity level of a 10 year old" (I assume you mean a 10 year old child, not dog).

A fall doesn't cause the kind of damage that it seems you are talking about. It's "wear and tear" and she could have caught her paw in a rut or hole and wrenched her leg. A much as we all want to, we are unable to watch our dogs 24/7.

6 week recovery...keep her crated and quiet. Personally, I would add a regime of Glucosamine and Chondroitin to her diet. It helped to cure my lab. His tear was only partial so we did not require surgery but the vet agreed with my supplement addition.'

    Good luck!

Bravo One weird and wonderful Ferret there is this unusual assumption that vets are wealthy and in it for the money...HA. I wish! it may well be great to be independantly wealthy and have the potential to grant veterinary safeguard loose yet that basically isn't a reality! Your canines is your duty, maximum cruciate ligament maintenance do no longer value $5000 (i'm guessing this is the concern because of the fact the 2d often is going to boot). yet how is that the vet's concern and why whilst a vet expenses properly are they in it for the money? in case you could no longer have the money for the surgical treatment attempt asking a chum for economic help. It amazes me how many people think of the vet might desire to offer them credit yet they might't (or won't) get a private loan from a chum; much extra effective the folk who could have the money for to smoke, drink etc... and have credit playing cards for emergency circumstances yet apparantly figuring out to purchase their puppy in an emergency concern does not count variety. whilst your vehicle has broken down are you able to get it decrease back from the mechanic without paying? enable me see, are you able to get your groceries for loose? How approximately drugs? gas? nutrition? clothing? people might desire to take duty for their animals which ability paying costs whilst the animal is ill. Animals are no longer inanimate gadgets and anybody who has an animal is conscious that for the duration of a few unspecified time interior the destiny in time they're going to choose clinical interest for their puppy. in the adventure that your puppy is suffering for the reason which you could't have the money for clinical care it is your fault no longer your vets.

    Cruciate Ligament surgery needs good rehab to permanently keep the joint in the socket. Here's how to rehab;

The price you were quoted for the surgery is remarkable. Here it costs $1500.00 and up.

ACL repair maybe? depends on how much damage has been done to the joint and how good the surgeon is

My husband and I did our 40# dog's ACL repair, but if our dog had been larger- we would have opted to have a Board Cert. Ortho, surg. do the sx
