Symptoms in men is very RARE so its possible to have it without knowing for years. As for women you'll have symptoms within 2-3 weeks of coming in contact with the infection. However (this is only form personal exp. and may not apply to your situation) if you have a bf and you recently found out you have it it wasn't dormant in him (i doubt you got it the first time you had sex with him) and if that's what he's claiming he's lying he cheated. Again this may not be your situation but this is what happened to me.

Trichomonas can be symptomless in men so it's possible that he may have not known. For women, you will most definitely start getting symptoms 3 to 4 days after the encounter. This is from personal experience as well.

tichomonas dose not diagnose by vdrl. a man can be unknown .in woman itching burning of vulva.
