Do older people need to have training to protect themselves while shopping?

Yesterday I was getting in line at a checkout counter with ONE item only in my basket when three different women with full baskets cut in line ahead of me! I was taught to let those with a small purchase to go first because it wouldn't take much time when my basket full would take more time. I would have had to act like a battering ram to have taken my turn in the line.

I don't understand rude people at all. People through their selfish ideas have forgotten about the rest of humanity and are not only rude to you but others as well. I am still fairly young and I'll be looking at products on a shelf and other shoppers will come stand directly in front of the product I'm looking at. It is extremely strange to say the least. It's as if they WANT to be noticed by somebody and it doesn't matter who as long as they force someone to look at them..... I don't usually say a word or I'll say ummmm, excuse me, I was just looking at that. I don't ever remember someone trying to cut into line but that would be really rude also. I wonder what has happened to politeness and common courtesy?

So all these women were actually elderly?......OLD?

It doesn't seem like an elderly woman would do this, but I believe what you are saying.

I guess I say kudos to the guy that sticks up for elderly people....that's very noble......BUT.....I think that if elderly people are going to be out and about in society then they have to follow all the rules everyone else has to follow. Whether it be in a car driving down the road, or in a store checkout line.

It was downright rude of all three of these women to do that. I hate to say this, but if all three of them were rude like this to you in line, then they were probably at least that bad, and worse when they were younger. You'd think they'd mellow, but apparently not.

You should have said something tho.......that was REALLY rude.

Civilized society only works when everyone pitches in, and then 'reminds' others when it's appropriate.

No training is necessary in most older folks cases. That was ignorant and extremely rude of them and yes, it is right to let those with smaller purchase, like yours, to go ahead. However the line jumpers need to be put in their place and you could have told them, loudly if needed, that you were there first and you only have one thing. If they get obnoxious, you can get louder or get management involved or just move to another line. Line jumpers are usually embarrassed and will move with enough loud pressure.

I wish all of the elderly had a younger relative to look after them & take them out, etc. I would never have let my Grandma go out alone without me with her to help her out with things, drive her up to the door, etc.

No, because they know that people like me are around who will gladly teach an ****** that does not respect their elders a lesson. Remember, the elderly have a lot less time on this earth than younger people do, so why not let them go ahead of you or give them special treatment. They really deserve it as some of them protected out freedom, raised us, worked as/in hospitals/police/fireman/teachers need I go on?

Source(s): Hapkido, Aikido, Jujitsu and I also teach self defense and have a body guard license. I have fought in MMA tournaments and do pro wrestling as a hobby. But the biggest thing is I love and respect my elders.

Next time load your cart with a sack of flour and use it as a battering ram.
