How to get closer to a guy i rlly like?

okay so there's a guy i like hes grade ahead of me but anyways ive liked him for 3 years now and wanna get closer to him. we txt a lot but in person its AWKWARD!!!! so the other day he was in the same store as me and a ton of my friends but im shy :/ so i didn't say hi s he txted me and said "jerk u didn't say hi" and i said sorry nxt time i will and he told me i better so later i ran into him again and that time i said hi but then we went our separate ways again and kept txting so anyways i rlly like him and wanna like be less awkward in person and im gonna ask him to chill wit me on friday so what else can i do?
