If I convert a DVDRip media file to AVI. When I burn to DVD will it retain the original quality?
I converted a bunch of DVDrip downloads to AVI because they were MP4 etc or had subtitle files (you cannot burn these to DVD). I am new to converting and I converted them to AVI. Then burnt them to DVD. I realise now I could of converted them to DVD then burnt them and I`m wondering if they lost quality converting to AVI. Also I'm hoping the quality came back in burning to DVD. Hope someone can answer this for me please? Thanks

If you have a decent encoder you should be able to put the Dvd downloads that you downloaded straight into it without converting to AVI first and burn to Dvd.
Here is a site on hoe to for you

First of all when you download an MP4 you have already lost quality from the original DVD. When a DVDrip is made, parts of each frame of the video are discarded. This allows for the file size to become much smaller. Using algorithms they calculate the best parts to discard to allow the movie to still be watchable but have less information in the frame.
Then when you converted them to AVI, yes you did indeed lose MORE quality. Even more information was discarded from the translation to AVI.
Once you have lost quality it cannot come back. The information has been discarded when you converted the file. The computer cannot re-make the information that has been lost.
Therefore if you burn those AVI files you will have double reduced quality on the final product -- a big difference from the original DVD quality.

why not just convert the mp4's to dvd with convertxtodvd, you can include your subtitles in with the mp4 along with menu and chapter's and if you have a mess with the settings and select long encoding time/high quality you wont notice any degredation when u watch it on any size tv as long as your using "dvdrips",on my computer(1.8 phenom quadcore) only takes about half an hour to convert and burn to a dvd

Really only one way to find out and that is to try it. DVDs are not expensive. If it's no good, bin the dvd.
