Rebuilding a transmission (4L80E)?

Ok, A little history here. I am going to attempt to confront my only fear in the automotive world. Its an attempt to rebuild my 4L80E. Is there anything I should know and is it somthing that I should be able to do successfully?. I have an extensive background and was a GM Technician, but my areas were Drivability and electrical, and heavy line, so I am a hardened and seasoned Tech, buuuuut, I dont dont want to underestimate the challenge of a trans, or overestimate my ability to do it, because I know that there is a million ways to get it wrong and only one way to get it right. Looking for some advice, pointers or FYI's before I begin. Thanks!.

Update:

Also, I am aware that I will need the special tools. I have access to them if I need, but Ill probably just buy a trans specific set on-line.

Be clean! Beware of bushing wear especially on 1997 and newer model years. Always replace center support bushing and front pump bushings, no matter how they look. Check for wear in boost sleeve/valve in pressure regulator valve train in the pump 90% of the ones I see are worn/loose. Bushing between forward drum and OD planet-look at it feel it replace it. Broken record BUSHINGS! Replace the pressure control solenoid and shift solenoids. Center support snap ring look at where the gap is when you take it apart put it back the way you found it and it's tapered flat down taper up. Bearings in the planetary set, look for wear/pits replace as necessary. New or rebuilt torque converter is a must. Case bushing-yep bushings again. Valve body, clean and inspect look and AFL valve make sure not loose. Behind manual valve is a screen with a o-ring replace both should be in your O.H. kit as well as another screen in the case and another in the valve body in the fluid passage side. Another O-ring is "hidden" in the valve body in front of the 3-4 shift valve. If it has heavy metal contamination or has been very hot replace the pressure switch manifold on the valve body. Not sure what model year your working on but to be safe replace bonded fwd and direct pistons (97 and newer) I don't always replace but I am very picky about what I reuse. No "real" special tools needed. Except for here (I go again) bushing drivers and a good cape chisel. I should also mention that many bushings are different 96 and older 97 and newer. Along with many other hard parts within this unit. Do NOT mix and match or you WILL buy a gear train. 97 and newer remove rear cooler line fitting from case before trying to remove center support. Flush cooler! This is getting to long. Good luck! LATER
