Should I have said something?

I just left Stop & Shop. There was an elderly couple at the self check-out next to me. They scanned and bagged all their items, then walked out without paying for anything. When I say elderly, I mean ELDERLY. Moving slowly and a bit disheveled. I figured they were in dire straits and hungry, so I said nothing. I'd have gladly paid for the food myself if it came to that. What do you guys think you would have done in that situation?

Update:

Stop & Shop is a large grocery store chain in New England.

Is Stop & Shop a decent company? Or another faceless corporation who rip you off?

In my head, I would have marched straight over to the couple, exercised my moral duty and performed a citizen's arrest by rugby tackled them and dragging them to the nearest police station kicking and screaming. And a few swift back-handers as a lesson to make sure the dirty thieving scum never do it again

But in my heart, I'd probably turned the other way and shoved a packet of wine gums in my pocket and walked out without saying a word.

David I must first ask how they got out of the door without a manager stopping them? You did say like real elderly right, so running was not an option. Maybe they had an account or were on food stamps and the store knew they would pay later. Or, just a random act of kindness from the stores manager.

But I must say you have a good heart

And you don't look bad walking away either

Honestly, I would have said something. Everybody makes mistakes without realizing they didn't do it. In the situation, elderly people do have a tendency of forgetting without being reminded. I don't think it would have done any harm to bring it to the store clerks attention & it's not too late to do so.

You did the right thing Dave. Either they just forgot or couldn't afford it. Either way they're seniors and deserve a break. Imagine if you'd made a big deal about it and gotten them in trouble. You'd surely remember that a long time and not in a positive way.

Well that's tough. If they're super elderly then maybe they forgot to pay but if they're also dirt poor maybe they're just acting super elderly in order to get away with it.

I'd probably not say anything....old people need to eat too.

    They got free stuff?

No, of course not, I take it they were at a big chain store right?

F**k em, let them lose a few bucks...

I wouldn't have said anything, they probably can't afford to buy it and Im sure the place you were won't miss that little bit

Just let it happen its none of your concern. What if that was you who needed that food and stuff?

I think you should have told them that they didn't pay, you know older people can be deceiving too they might have done it on purpose,But i highly doubt that. haha. don't feel bad though, it wasn't your fault, just laugh about it.
