why does asparagus make my urine stink?

It makes a lot of peoples pee stink. It gives me really smelly gas too. hahaha!

One theory suggests that asparagus breaks down quickly in the body and an enzyme releases methyl mercaptan, which eventually goes through the kidneys and is excreted as a waste product in the urine.

Others suggest that the asparagus smell is created by other chemical compounds called thioesters. There is also a compound called asparagusic acid, which is not surprisingly found primarily in asparagus. If these compounds are broken down and mixed with the genetically-created enzyme, the results could be a strong smelling urine. This smell is actually considered to be good news, since it proves that the asparagus eater's kidneys are functioning as they should.

In a nut shell, your body is metabolizing the asparagus properly. Enzymes are breaking it down into waste products that just happen to smell foul (thiol/sulfur and/or mercaptans) this is the same "ingredient" that most natural gas providers add to the gas flow line so that if you have a leak you can smell it easily.

Actually, not everyone that eats asparagus will have strong stinky pee after-wards. I think it's a genetic trait - kinda like having oily skin or not... So, blame it on "old Aunt Bessie" ;)
