Nintendo ds for a 7 year old?
Looking to get my son a Nintendo ds for christmas. He has never played one but loves to play games on the computer. It is really a gift for me....lol, for when he has to sit through his sisters dance class and waiting in the dr. office. something to keep him busy but not to play all day long. So..there are a few..ds, dsi, lite, xl. I have no idea which one will be best. suggestions please! And are all the ds games able to be played on all the different ds's?
what "features" does the dsi have that the ds doesn't?

As an owner of a DS Lite and a DSi, I can definitely be sure that all DS games can be played on all DS systems.
There are a few differences in the different DS types.
The original DS is very clunky and big.
The DS Lite is less clunky, and it's lighter.
The DSi is similar to a DS Lite but it has 2 cameras built in,as well as internet connectivity and the DS Store.
The DSi XL is basically the DSi with a bigger screen.
Also, there is the 3DS which is coming out soon (I think?) and it will have 3D games.
So, I recommend either the DSi or DSi XL. They both allow you to download extra games for the DS, and my DSi actually gave me 1000 points to spend on the online store. If you want some games for it, try the Pokemon games. My younger brother and I both love the series, and I started playing them when the Game Boy Advance was out. They aren't too complex and if your son gets stuck then there are plenty of help sites on the Internet.
Good luck finding some games, just remember they must be DS games and not Game Boy games.
Edit: You want to know what features the DSi has but the DS Lite doesn't?
The DSi has 2 cameras (which are extremely hard to break) so he would have fun taking pictures, as there is also a basic picture-editing thing installed into the DSi. It also has internet connectivity (which IS optional) and the DS store, which lets you download more games for him to play.
The DS Lite has none of these features. In my experience, a DS Lite is much easier to break.

i would say the nintendo dsi but the only difrece in the xl is the screen i bigger than the ds's but except for that i think its the same as the dsi so the dsi is cheaper if u want to save a little bit of money but i think the nintendo 3ds would be good but i dont know when its comming out but the oringinal is cheaper but he will play the dsi and xl and 3ds longer

I would go with the DS lite. Its way cheaper, can play GBA games, and the DSi just has a bunch of features a 7 year old doesn't need, like a camera and internet.

if a game is for the Nintendo DS, its for all of them.
a regular DS lite would be your standard DS, you said that he wuoldnt play for hours and all day? then he sure dosnt need a DSi, that would just be more out of your pocket fora feature he wouldnt be using.

nintendogs, guitar hero, nickalodean, and my favorite cooking mama.., and disney nintendogs-a game where you get to take care of dogs and you get to feed them and play with them and just have fun. cooking mama-you get to cook stuff. and you get graded on how well you follow the instructions and also when you finish a new recipe and get a good score you get a new reciepe. guitar hero- it exactally like that game except for nintendo d.s all you do is use the stick thing and slide across the screen and then you strum. not only good game for kids but also fun game for adults. nickalodean- nickalodean games are fun. they have spongebob, fairly odd parents, icarly, and many more they have super heros games that are really fun. disney games- the same thing as nickolodean except for disney characters like hannah montanna or thats so raven

DSi is way more expensive and has internet, which he doesnt need. i would go as basic as possible and make it clear to him that he is to be responsible for this, so if he breaks it hes not getting another one, this is a big responsibility to trust him with. i think you should limit its usage to only waiting times when he has nothing else to do, hes too young to be glued to it all day.
