Medicine Balls
•The medicine ball is an excellent baseball training tool, as it can build explosive power into your muscles, teaching them to work together as one solid unit. Starting with an 8- or 9-pound medicine ball is a good idea. Some exercises with the medicine ball include squatting against the wall while holding the medicine ball at your chest like a basketball player about to make a chest pass and then springing up, tossing the ball in the air and then catching it when it comes down. See how many of these you can do over the course of 90 seconds.
Weightlifting
•Weightlifting can be beneficial to baseball players if done correctly; although, if a player works out too much, it can build up muscles that will inhibit his ability to be quick on the base paths or swing a bat as swiftly as he should. It can also lead to injury. Trying to lift too much weight over your head can lead to injuries of the rotator cuffs, which is the main joint used by players when throwing a baseball. So, overhead lifts with heavy weights should be avoided in general. The lower body is best to weight train by doing squats, deadlifts and leg presses. Core strengthening is also integral to baseball training, as it will help you to swing and throw with more power.
Forearm Strengthening
•A number of exercises can be done by holding weights or weighted bats alone to strengthen the smaller muscles that you never knew you used until you played baseball. This is especially true for the forearms. By simply holding a weighted bat straight out in front of you and slowly lifting and lowering it up and down, your forearms will be strengthened with smaller sinewy muscles which will help your grip and the speed of your swing. Also practice swinging slowly with this weighted bat, fully extending your arms and turning your body. This will strengthen both your forearms and your core, and this will strengthen them in a motion that will be repeated in a game.
