Could I substitue 3 12v batteries for 6 6v batteries in a golf cart?

It has 6 6 volt deep cycle batteries ran in a series. I dont want to buy $700 worth of replacement batteries for it so could I get 3 cheap 12 volt deep cycle batteries and wire them in a series to be a direct replacement?

There is probably a reason for that configuration, but in theory, if they were wired in series for 36v, then 3 12v should work as well.

it can be done, but i would not recommend it. 1st of all, the battery life would be severely shortened, and second, it could be an accident waiting to happen as it could overload the 3 battery system and potentially, though unlikely, cause an explosion.
