It sounds like you have a scripting problem and some of your software needs updating. I am giving you a link to Yahoo Messenger Help page:
http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=product&y=PROD...
Where it says "Welcome to Yahoo Messenger 10 Help", select your product from the drop down box.
Then where it says "Search", try inputting "Script Problems".
Here is a link giving you information on troubleshooting scripting problems in Vista and Windows7:

check over your Internet option if you are enabling "Java Script" and the rests about scripting.
Tool > Internet Option > Advanced : scroll down and tick boxes about scripting.
