With Conditional Formatting, use a formula that refers to the condition of the cell being formatted. For example, if you are formatting column A from A1 to A100, highlight all the cells in that range and access conditional formatting. Use the following formula as your rule:
=A1=""
Set your conditional color Pattern and click 'OK' twice.

Highlight the range of cells that you want to work with, it can include any other rows (Ex. A1, B1,C1)
Go to:
FORMAT>CONDITIONAL FORMATTING
Change the condition drop-down from Cell Value is to FORMULA IS
In the box next to it type the formula =(followed by the 1st cell from the cells you highlighted dont use parenthesis)=""
Ex: =B1=""
Before you hit ok, click FORMAT while still having this box open and choose a color. Click OK, then OK again to save your formula.
