Shih Tzu potty training difficulties. PLEASE HELP!?

Okay, so my 3 month old Shih Tzu is on a potty schedule during the day, which she is pretty good at following. An hour after going poop and pee outside, she will poop inside. My husband and I will go through the process of making her sniff it, pointing our finger at her and saying "NO! BAD" (taking her outside in the grass), then we put her in her dog kennel. I didn't think it would take this long to potty train her. Overall, she is a very good puppy. I am running out of patience trying to train her. Does anyone know how long it takes to potty train a Shih Tzu? Any suggestions? Should I sell her?

ONLY SERIOUS ANSWERS PLEASE!

Update:

I've read online and many books (specific to puppies) that you are supposed to make them smell it and say NO! BAD DOG! and immediately take them outside.

Update 2:

I tried puppy pads but she runs off with them and tears them to shreds! I don't know much about this breed, so I think buying a book about Shih Tzus would be helpful, in addition to being patient. I've never owned a puppy before, so I don't know what to expect. With that said, I am off to the book store to buy a book.....

The smelling and saying bad dog wont work...its the old fashioned way of doing things...the dog doesnt know why pooping is bad...you just take her out and sit her down so she gets it. Puppies go after eating/drinking/every hour-two hours/middle of the night...so take her before she gets a chance, if she goes anyway then take her outside. You dont use newspaper or puppy pads? I ask because that will set you back drastically. You can also keep her sectioned off so you can keep an eye on her. Ive potty trained a million fosters and my own dogs this way and its always worked fairly easily...you may not be catching her before she actually needs to go again. I would try walking her longer as well so she has more time to get everything out...including two poos if thats what she needs.

I would avoid the kennel as it shouldnt really be used for punishment...you just need to make sure you are really really consistant and that she is being caught in time...those are the two biggest factors.

I wouldnt sell him...its hard to answer you on here when we dont see the situation but if he isnt learning then its something you are doing (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) not the dog so you will likely have the same issue with another dog.

There are many potty training methods for puppies. I suggest using only positive reinforcement to avoid stressing your shih tzu. If puppy pads are not working, get a porch potty. This is especially helpful to dog owners with toy breeds. A porch potty comes with a scented fire hydrant. The scent attracts puppies and will help in forming the habit of using the porch potty for peeing and pooping.

If you prefer training the puppy to potty inside, here are some tips that I'm sure would help a lot.

Refrain from making the puppy smell her poop and saying "No, bad dog!" and putting her in her kennel. This is the part where you are doing it wrong. What you are doing is only confusing and stressing the animal.

Try the methods below. I have used this same methods with my own dogs. I trained them since they were young and even now that they are all grown up.

First, you need to know that most puppies under 6 months need to go potty almost every hour especially toy breeds so please be extra patient. Toy breeds have smaller bladders and cannot hold it longer as compared to large breeds. Take your shih tzu outside first thing in the morning when she wakes up. Make sure she walks outside by herself, don't pick her up, she needs to find her way outside the house. Put her on a leash or lure her with food. Food lures usually works.

Take her outside again after you feed her. In fact, you have to take her outside after every meal. Puppies need to go potty after eating. Take her outside as well after playing with her.

Once outside, give a command. Say "go potty" then praise her in your happiest voice and give her a reward the minute she finished peeing or pooping. Keep doing this each time you take your shih tzu outside to potty.

Start with your training on weekends when you are off work and have plenty more time to train. Be patient and be consistent. It's hard work but can be very rewarding in the end.

There are trainging techniques that you can use. Learn here https://tr.im/Wxmdm

    HEEL:

    1. A dog straining on the lead is the result of improper early heel-training. Reinstruction will be required to remedy the fauly.

    2. Correct positioning ensures that the dog can anticipate the owner's actions such as a change in direction, sudden stop or new instruction.

    3. A lagging dog can also indicates bad heel training. Frequent sharp tugs on the check chain should encourage the dog to keep up with its owner.

    SIT:

    1. On the command 'sit', press the dog's hindquarters firmly down with your left hand while keeping the dog's head supported in the air.

    2. Keep the lead taut in the right hand, giving it a slight upwards pull as you press the hindquarters down to help the dog respond.

    3. Crouching down beside, but not over, the dog may prove helpful in teaching more unruly dogs to perform the exercise.

    SIT STAY:

    1. Pul the dog in the sit position by holding your hand up in front of the dogs face and giving the command ' sit' in a firm voice.

    2. Then move in the front of the dog jerking on the check chain if any attempt is made to move. If the dog does move, start agian.

    3. Keeping your hand high up in front of the dog, and repeating the command 'stay', back off bit by bit, increasing the space between you.

    SPEAK:

    1. Tell the dog to speak, if he doesnt, the owner must bark to encourage the dog to bark

    2. soon enough the dog will bark

She is doing this because she is under stress. DO NOT make them smell it or yell at them when they do this. they are only babies! instead, take him outside and wait after dinner or a snack.

    hope this helps!

ps: putting them in a dog kennel won't help, it will make them more stressed!
