My Jenn-aire stove-top sparks but has trouble lighting?

It sparks for about 30 seconds before lighting, I can smell and hear gas,,,, any idea what is going on?

Update:

The burners are spotless, the spark is very aggressive sounding and there seems to be plenty of gas. I am perplexed.!

if the gas flow is too much it will not ignite. if the spark is weak or too far away from the gas entrance it will not ignite.

Pull the burners off, they should just lift up. Check that you are actually getting spark at the burner, then look for anything blocking the natural flow of the gas.

The ignitors sometimes get dirty, or simply fail.

Worst case, use a long lighter. It's a drag, but it's cheap

I have noticed that if one of the ceramic burner tops is slightly off center the igniter will keep sparking. That has been driving us crazy for a while. I'll check the burners for blocked ports near the ignitor. Thanks for the suggestions

The gas is not getting to the spark.

Check the holes in the burner near where the sparker is.It may be partially blocked or the spark is weak.

On the newer models that is about the right time frame for the unit to ignite if the unit is a little older you may have something blocking the jet or your ignite may be on the out.
