Why do people claim that same-sex marriage is about changing the definition of marriage when it's really about?

not giving in to people's dislike of homosexuality?

IN OTHER WORDS, the people that ask, why don't you just SETTLE for civil unions?

The answer is: because we shouldn't give in to your dislike of homosexuality.

Same-sex marriage is about us, not you. What we had in mind was to get married, not "civil-unioned".

The definition of marriage already changed whenever the first same-sex couple decided to get married. You can't change reality. You can't stop two people from marrying unless you go and arrest them. The only thing you can do is tell the state not to recognize their union, which is wrong.

Update:

@Upside Down

Okay, let's pretend that you're black, and we white people don't like you very much so we decide to make a special school just for you guys, so that we don't have to go to the same school, and we force you to go to that school because we don't want you in our school. Just as long as the two schools are equal, why should you care, right?

Update 2:

@Upside Down

But the truth is that it is NOT just about a word... It's about the whole situation and what it implies...

    I think it has to do with your need to always be in people's faces demanding something they don't want to give you. I'm sure that will help.

    Source(s): Most of us leave this behind with adolescence, btw.

    I could care less if two guys want to marry each other, but if you dropped the legal term "marriage" and called it something else, you might get people to accept you more. If you had all the same rights as a married couple, why the hell do you care what someone else calls your relationship? You can consider yourselves married and it shouldn't matter what some bureaucrat labels you. I remember when gays use to enjoy the fact that they were different. A ton of people don't believe in gay marriage which probably pisses you off, but if you all truly cared about people accepting you, you would come together and let them keep their stupid term "marriage."

    edit: Your school analogy is ridiculous. It's just a word...in some registry of the government. You can call yourselves whatever you want. There is no separate school...or building. You don't have to ride in the back of a bus. If you asked for the exact same rights as a married couple but just used a different term, it would go a long way to uniting people instead of dividing them. People are old fashioned. They cling on to crap like that. You are putting too much importance on a word just like you are complaining someone else is. It's called hypocrisy. You can get married....I don't care. I have tons of gay friends who are single and married. I have no problem with anybody marrying who they want. All I am saying is if you as a culture truly cared about united people instead of dividing them, you would not put so much importance in a word that well...is just a word.

    edit: You know..if you really wanted to be treated like everyone else, you wouldn't have a picture of you and your lover getting funky with each other. Most heterosexuals (even the kinky ones) don't post pics of themselves doing it with each other. The ones that do probably understand that people would react to them differently. You want society to deem you a conformist and accept you yet your very nature contradicts your statements. You are throwing your sexuality in societies face. You don't care about being treated equally. You only want to harm people who you think perceive you as a lesser being...when most of them don't care what you do. They just want their stupid word. So, go ahead - post naked pictures of you and your lover while at the same time scream from the mountain top "why don't you accept me, society!!!" You are either very young and/or or very naive. You pretend the rest of the world can't see outside their box. I would argue your box is just as small....if not smaller.

    There are probably no more than 100 couples in this whole country that are abiding by the rules of true traditional marriage.

    Y'know the marriages where the established older guy marries the thirteen year old girl and basically makes her his slave who he can rape and beat as the need arises

    Every other legally married couple in in this country >especially the couples who are under 60>are living under a very new and very modern definition of marriage

    So how the H can the people who are already living under non-traditional rules of marriage condemn gay people for wanting to modify those rules a bit to suit their needs ?

    It's not about changing a definition. It's about gay people trying to push their destructive liberal agenda on traditional families. It is about the destruction of traditional families which happens to be the basis for society around the world.

    If gays are so big on equal rights for marriage where will it stop? Will it stop at 2 same sex people or will it go further into polygamy or bestiality? How about recognizing groups like NAMBLA? Should we give it to their lusts as well?

    I given this issue great thought, I have come to the realization that I really don't care.

    If I was in a voting booth, I would pass on the vote. On one hand I won't vote against it, but nor will I support it.

    Both sides spew too much hate/intolerance for me to support either one, so I wash my hands of the entire issue.

    Because, in as Stephen Colbert says, heterosexuals only got married to say to homosexuals "haha I did it and you can't"

    Because they're selfish, judgemental, and only want things THEIR way.

    Let gays get married!
