My dvd/cd drive isnot reading any type of disc that I put in.?

My dvd/cd drive isnot reading any type of disc that I put in.It shows up in my bios/computer/system but is just not reading any disc that I put in.If I clcik on the drive after i put in a disc it just asks me to please insert disc.I have taken it apart and unplugged an uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing is working.It worked fine before and now it just isn't working.It all started when my brother in law took the drive out to put in another drive to test to see if it would work since originally the plan was just to add another drive but when he couldn;t get it to read or work he then just put everything back the way it was an then this issue came up.I got a friend to put in both drives so they would read in the system.I can get them to open and close but I cannot get them to read any discs I put in.Anyone have any ideas how to fix this or what I can do?
