What is a "Land whale" please USA folk ?

I just spent a lovely evening around Texan's house, and she kept saying what a "Land whale" her dog was...was she being rude?

    It means very fat. Arguably it was rude to the dog, but the dog probably doesn't care.

    yes it means a fat person, so her dog is lazy and fat.
