It's probably a cheap metal that tarnishes easily. You could buy her a jewelry cleaning machine for a gift. I think you can find some that are $30 or less.

some times jewelery that isnt real gold will cause this. and i know if i wear a silver necklace it will cause my neck and necklace to discolor.
